E-commerce Web sites are, by their very nature, more complex from a design point of view.

Large amounts of data need to be stored & manipulated, usually by means of a database.

For example:
an item in your e-commerce store will have at least one and possibly all of the following:

1. price
2. ID code
3. picture of the item (thumbnail and/or high resolution)
4. choice of colour
5. choice of size
6. quantity
7. packing costs
8. VAT code
9. re-order level
10. supplier ID etc, etc

Every combination of the above for each item will need to be entered in a database and referenced to the item. Designing and building an e-commerce website is therefore a complex and time-consuming task.
